Some Interesting Advice

Over the years I have come across some very interesting people and some even more interesting books while working at various libraries. I wish I had written down all the funny, random, weird titles that I have come across over the years! Today I came across an “old” (1993) book with a generic-sounding title, Life’s Little Instruction Book, Vol II. But when I cracked it open, it was full of the randomest advice! Some of the tips were useful, and some were just plain silly (I am pretty sure the author is serious though…) Here are a few of the more interesting, funny, and unique ones:

  1. Never drive while holding a cup of hot coffee between your knees (duh!)
  2. Never miss an opportunity to sleep on a screened-in porch
  3. Have a professional photo of yourself made. Update it every three years.
  4. Never take the last piece of fried chicken
  5. Never pick up anything off of the floor of a cab
  6. Tour the main branch of the public library on Fifth Avenue the next time you are in New York City. Unforgettable.
  7. Never give anybody a fondue set or anything painted avocado green
  8. Plant zucchini only if you have a lot of friends
  9. Don’t marry a women who picks at her food
  10. Order a seed catalog. Read it on the day of the first snowfall
  11. Read a book about beekeeping
  12. When asked to play the piano, do it without complaining or making excuses (haha alrighty then, that’s gonna sound beautiful!)
  13. Take off the convention badge as soon as you leave the convention hall
  14. Never say anything uncomplimentary about another person’s dog
  15. When in doubt about what art to put on a wall, choose a framed black and white photo by Ansel Adams
  16. Learn to say “I love you” in French, Italian and Swedish (Swedish??)
  17. Memorize your favorite love poem
  18. When you are totally exhausted but have to keep going, wash your face and hands and put on clean socks and a clean shirt. You will feel remarkably refreshed.
  19. Never wash a car, mow a yard, or select a Christmas tree after dark.
  20. Learn how to make tapioca pudding and peanut butter in the microwave.

I hope you all learned something from all that sage advice! =)
