Can you imagine?

July 12, 2011

Romans 15: 5-6 “Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus: That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Often times as I sit in church and look at all the people around me, I am struck by just how much we could accomplish as a community of believers if we all were “likeminded according to Christ Jesus.” Can you imagine if we all were on the same page? Striving for the same goal? If we were all completely surrendered to Christ’s will for our lives? If we really meant the words we were singing?

All to Jesus I surrender, all to Him I freely give

Lord, send me anywhere

Early let us seek Thy favor, early let us do Thy will

Emptied that thou shouldest fill me, a clean vessel in thy hand

Search me O God, and know my heart today, Try me O Saviour, know my thoughts I pray,  See if there be some wicked way in me

Every week as we sing, I just wish we were all really singing from the heart. Thinking about what we were singing. Can you imagine if everyone meant what they were singing? And yet the sad reality is that probably most people aren’t even paying attention to what they are singing. And if they are paying attention, they probably don’t really mean it. I think if they did, the altar would be full. All the time. Not just once in a rare while.

I can’t help but look around as we sing and think that most people are really just singing a lie. And that’s so sad. If we have been saved from our sins, we now have a purpose that is so much bigger than ourselves. We should all be on the same path. Going the same direction. Trying to accomplish the same things. Unified under the same cause. We should be. Our goal in life shouldn’t be to promote ourselves any longer. But to promote Christ. And the things that glorify Him. Can you imagine the things we could accomplish? If we dedicated the rest of our lives to serving Christ? Just trying to be like Him? That would be awesome! I just imagine a group of us going to different countries and starting churches, helping missionaries, just trying to do whatever we can. That would be so cool! Maybe someday it won’t be just a dream.

I wonder what Christ thinks, though, when He looks at us. When He hears the songs we sing. He knows our hearts as we sing the words. He knows if we mean it or not. And I wonder if He’d rather us just not sing them at all? If we don’t mean what we say….

Can you imagine going to a baseball game where none of the players want to wear the uniform and so you don’t even know which team is which? Where the left fielder is just out picking daisies and the right fielder is doing cartwheels? Where the pitcher has decided to sit down and take a nap? Where no one wants to do what they were drafted to do? I feel like that must be what God sees sometimes when He looks down at us. A team that doesn’t really want to be identified as a team, and that certainly doesn’t want to do their part. More and more I see Christians who should be easily identified as Christians just blending in with the world. If I didn’t know them, and just ran into them on the street, wearing what they are wearing in the photos they post online, I would never ever guess that they were on Christ’s team. And that is so sad because we are on the winning team. It’s not like we’ve been drafted to a losing team. One that we should be ashamed of. If we are a follower of Christ, we have every reason to be proud of our “team.” A MLB player doesn’t hide the fact that he’s been drafted, he’s proud of the fact and he wears his uniform with pride. Especially if his team has a winning record. He doesn’t try to hide the fact, and go put on a losing team’s uniform. That would be crazy. Wouldn’t make any sense. So why do we do it? In an area that is so much more important than a dumb game?

Let’s all get excited about what we are singing! And about the fact that we were drafted to a winning team. If we are saved we have been blessed beyond measure. And that’s something worth singing about. Something worth giving everything for!
