San Francisco

September 18, 2009

On Monday, after I got off work, we drove up to San Francisco for a few days. Ruth’s family offered to let us stay at their house, and that was a huge blessing (and so much nicer than having to stay at a hotel! Much more room!). On Tuesday we did shopping and stuff before the game and the plan was to get there for batting practice. We didn’t get there till 5:40 though, just as the Giants were finishing up. So we watched the Rockies take BP and hoped to get autographs. We weren’t able to get any before the game (no one came out), although we did get some afterwards. Zito pitched, and surprisingly, the team came through with a little run support. Without looking at the numbers, I’m going to guess it’s the most they’ve gotten in one game for Zito. Considering the fact that he’s had 10 starts without them giving him any runs at all… Zito’s an awesome pitcher, although you wouldn’t necessarily know it by looking at his record. But when he gets 4 or more runs in a game, he’s 106 and 6. That’s amazing! Anyways, so we won 10-2 and had a great night. Jimenez, one of the Rockies’ aces, got knocked out of the game in the 3rd inning!

Afterwards, my family wanted to wait and let the crowd thin out a little before we left, so we were some of the last few to leave. We watched as the seagulls swooped in to get all of the left behind food, and watched as the security guards tried to escort a drunk girl (who had jumped the railing) off the field. And then as the police arrested her and led her away. We made our way down near the player’s parking lot then (since last time we had been able to get autographs that way). This time though, no one stopped so after hanging out with a group of fans who would yell and wave as each player left, we decided to head back and find our parents. When we got over there, my mom was waving at us and saying something about the players. Then we realized that the whole time we’d been by the parking lot, a few players had been walking out of the stadium! Schierholtz was signing autographs (as he was trying to get across the street to the bar) so I got his autograph (I really wanted a pic because I wanted to text it to James, but I couldn’t find my phone or my camera) and then Joe Martinez came out. I was kinda stunned that they were just walking out like that, so I kinda just stood there trying to decide if I should really go ask for his autograph or not. Then as he crossed the street, one of my brothers followed him and got his autograph. The poor guy got stuck in the middle of the street, on the phone, signing autographs.

The next night, we had to leave right after the game, so we couldn’t stay and get autographs, unfortunately. We got to the park earlier that night, right as the gates opened. But none of the Giants were signing autographs. We got a few Rockies autographs though.

And Tom got the ball that De La Rosa was warming up with. We had gotten better, field level seats for the second game, but we were trailing the whole game. So we left in the 9th innning since we were losing 4-0. As we are walking out in the bottom of the ninth, someone gets a hit. I think it was Sanchez, but we were walking so I wasn’t able to really watch. Then someone else gets a hit. So we stopped and sat down to watch a bit. We ended up getting 3 runs, all we needed was one more to at least tie it and go to extra innings. But with two out, two on, Schierholtz struck out. The loss could be blamed on a variety of things though. If ANYONE had been able to at least fly out, at many different times in the game, we would have won. If you’re going to make an out, at least make it profitable. We got men on base, we just couldn’t get most of them home. Even with no outs! So we all got our hopes up, the crowd was going wild, but oh well. To sweep the Rockies twice at home in just a few weeks’ time would have been awesome. There were a few broom-waving fans there, but the Giants weren’t able to pull it out. I guess there’s always next year. 🙂

I’ll bet if I was at PetCo Park getting Padres autographs, they’d be crossing the street trying to get to church!

On their way to the church to pray for next year’s season? 😉
