More fun at the Library…

February 26, 2008

Several people have expressed interest in the highly unique clientele that frequent the Glendora Public Library, so by popular demand 😉 I bring you another post full of fun from GPL! Something I found interesting when I started working at APU was that I recognized many of the people around APU as patrons from GPL! One of the two “Grumpy Old Men” actually frequents the Darling Library (APU) almost daily, much to my initial dismay! It didn’t take me too long to realize, however, that he is much nicer when he is at APU than when he is at GPL! Just yesterday one of my coworkers at GPL (actually it ended up being several coworkers by the time he left) had a run in with him! When she informed him that she would not be able to renew his ILL (interlibrary loan) book for him (due to the fact that only one person on staff is able to go through the proper channels (i.e the lending library), he demanded that she get one of her “superiors,” and gave them all grief. But then, that is really nothing new. You would be surprised at how pushy and rude people can get over free library materials. Sometimes you just want to say, “Lady, we are letting you borrow this book for free, what else do you want?” But anyways…We get the most colorful people in the library! One “favorite” for a while was the guy we called the “Frenchman.” I’m not sure if he was from France, but he was from somewhere… He had an accent and treated us all as if we existed solely to serve him. From what I gather he was a businessman here on business for a while, but I could be wrong. Anyway, he would always bring his son and daughter in with him and that was a nightmare! His kids were horrible and always destroyed our videos. When we would charge fines to his account due to the fact that he returned videos late AND his children had ripped all the labels and stickers off the videos, he would start into how his wife left him and how horrible it was! EVERY TIME! I don’t know what happened to him, he finally stopped coming. Then there was the lady who would always go stand in the back corner and read. She would STAND there for hours! And whenever anyone walked towards her, she would start walking away! It was fun to go shelve near her because then you got to walk towards her and chase her away. I know, we were so mean, but it was so funny. One day someone walked really fast towards her and she went running out of the building, we never saw her again! She obviously had some problems…. And the crazy lady who would say really weird things that made no sense at all, she was so creepy! I think she is the creepiest one yet. I can’t even begin to explain her, we really thought she was demon possessed! Thankfully she too has drifted off into the horizon! And then of course there are Jennifer and Michael and Jennifer’s bf. They are quite a threesome. Jennifer and Michael both say they don’t like each other (although a staff member found them making out in the stacks once – I asked them if it was true, just to mess with them and they both denied it so who knows) and Jennifer and her bf like to sit in front of the library and make out as people walk by.  The three of them are in the library every day! And when we have special events, they come in and eat the cookies by the dozen, seriously! But we also have “normal” people too. They are usually the ones we pay to come put on events for the children and their parents. There was one event with reptiles and monkeys and that was fun. The guy let me hold the boa constrictor, but he said the monkey wouldn’t let anyone hold her. L I really just did it to take a picture, I’m really not into snakes, but it impressed my coworkers!! And then we have Michael Ryan come every year for a “romantic guitar” event for Valentine’s Day. It is always fun working with live music on the main floor! Citrus Jazz band used to come about twice a year too, but people complained that it was too loud (staff members couldn’t hear to answer phones), so I am not sure if they are coming back. And then we had 2 basketball players come once, Tracy Murray, then with the LA Lakers, and his brother, Cameron Murray, with the Harlem Globetrotters. That was fun! And next month we have Ken Jennings (from Jeopardy) coming! That should be interesting! So interspersed with craziness we have small doses of sanity that keep us all coming back for more fun! This is the post to be continued throughout my life… J

It is no surprise that this strand of posting is back by popular demand bc it is so funny! I remember that lady that would run away! Remember how we would sometimes try to sneak up on her? Maybe that was with James B., I don’t really remember. Lots of good times! 🙂

Funny stories! You could write a book. 🙂

We went to a Snakes Alive presentation at our library and the boys got to touch the snakes, though the moms generally stayed away.

Hi Beck, it was probably James and I both! 🙂 I wonder what happened to her… It was so much fun to watch her run from people, especially since most people didn’t know what was going on!

MR – yes, if I remembered half of the stories I probably could write a book. I really should have been writing them down as the years went by!

TM – thanks for the prayers!

I always thought it was funny when the Romance section was moved and took away her coveted “less traveled” corner. lol Then she didn’t really have anywhere to hide out! She would stand there and rock back and forth – it was actually kinda creepy!
